Electronics industry enterprises learned about product requirements

On the 14th of May 2020, the University of Tartu, Tartu Observatory organized a webinar for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the electronics industry. The seminar focused on requirements that products have to comply with. The webinar was attended by more than 50 participants representing 20 different SMEs, universities and external experts and partners.

“When developing electronics products, a lot of valuable time can be saved if you know what requirements your product has to comply with. The webinar provided insight into important standards for product development.” Mari Allik, who works as an engineer at the University of Tartu, Tartu Observatory, specified. As an introduction, Tiia Lillemaa, project manager of the innovation support network TEST-4-SME at the University of Tartu presented the network and its opportunities for SMEs. Oliver Gailan, the Head of the Communications Department at the Consumer Protection and Technical Regulatory Authority in Estonia, introduced European requirements for electronic and radio equipment. His presentation gave an excellent overview of the standards that electronics products must comply with but also the steps that SMEs must take to allow their product to reach the market and the consumer. After the presentation, the attendees had the opportunity to ask questions and a very interesting discussion followed regarding what product development requirements are most critical. Next, Ants Tuisk who is the Technology Development Manager at the Estonian electronics manufacturing services company Enics Eesti AS, explained what IPC standards are and how electronics products should be developed in order to comply with these standards. As IPC standards are voluntary in the electronics industry, it is up to the company if they decide to develop their PCBs accordingly. Tuisk gave more insight into how to develop high-quality PCBs, the technical aspects of the development and what design mistakes to avoid. The feedback received after the webinar has been genuinely positive. The attendees of the webinar have highlighted that the topics of the webinar were very interesting and useful but also answered many important questions the SMEs had stumbled upon during the development phases.

Next webinar for electronics SMEs that covers topics related to development of electronics products will be held on the 11th of June 2020.
